Entries for the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition 2018 are now open.
Held annually, in partnership with the Association of Arts Pretoria, the competition is open to all South African artists who are 18 years and older and have not yet held a solo exhibition. Artists can submit work in all mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, performance art, video and installations.
As part of the competition, information sessions were to be held across the country this week to educate emerging artists on how they can produce and submit winning work.
There will also be national feedback sessions where artists who have submitted their works will have the opportunity to understand from the judges why certain entries were accepted and others not.
Artists can submit their artworks at one of several collection points around the country between 10am and 4pm on Monday July 2 and Tuesday July 3.
The final round of judging takes place at the Pretoria Art Museum on Wednesday August 8.
The winner of the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition will be announced on Wednesday August 29 at a gala event, after which the winning works will be displayed at the Pretoria Art Museum from Thursday August 30 to Sunday October 7.
The winner will receive R100 000 and a solo exhibition at next year’s exhibition, with the runner up winning R25 000 and the five merit award winners receiving R10 000 each.
Last year’s winner was Johannesburg-based artist, Lebohang Kganye, for her animated film Ke sale teng, which means I’m still here in Sesotho. The film confronts how family photo albums no longer have a fixed narrative but instead open us to reinterpret our past.
Through the use of silhouette cutouts of family members and other props in a diorama, Ke sale teng confronts the conflicting stories, which are told in multiple ways, even by the same person.
